WhatsOnTap was built over more than two years by Scott Leavitt, to do something the beer world had never quite managed: get people off their screens and into the room.
The idea didn't start with an app. It started with a barstool.
Scott kept noticing that the conversations that mattered most in his life hadn't happened in offices or over the phone. They'd happened over a pint, side by side with friends, in places built for exactly that.
After losing two brothers, those conversations became something more than good company. An evening beer with friends often turned into a source of support, perspective and healing — the kind that only comes from sitting with people who show up.
People think this is a beer app, but it's really a people app. Some of the most important conversations of my life happened over a pint. Those moments reminded me of the power of community, and that's what inspired WhatsOnTap. Breweries are more than places that serve beer — they're places where people connect. Scott Leavitt, Founder
Two problems, one place
Craft beer had a strange gap in it. Drinkers wanted to know what was pouring tonight, which taproom was worth the drive, and who might come along. Breweries wanted to tell them — and couldn't, not reliably. A new release would go up on social media and reach a fraction of the people who'd actually have driven out for it.
WhatsOnTap was built to close both ends of that gap at once. Drinkers open one map and find the breweries, wineries and distilleries around them, with live menus, upcoming events and the people they know. Breweries get a page they control and a direct line to the people already following them — no ad budget, no algorithm deciding who's allowed to hear it.
And running through all of it: Beer Buddies. Connect with someone and you can find each other on the map, which turns out to matter most in a town you've never been to before.
This isn't about beer ratings or screens. It's about supporting local businesses, meeting new people, and creating real connections. If WhatsOnTap helps someone find a new favorite brewery, make a new friend, or feel a little less alone, then we've succeeded. Scott Leavitt, Founder
